2 min read January 2023 — Frequent commuters can expect more savings in 2023 with the help of Florida’s new Toll Relief program, which began on Jan. 1.

“This program is expected to benefit approximately 1.2 million drivers and will save the average commuter nearly $400 in the 2023 calendar year,” said Florida Department of Transportation Secretary Jared Perdue in a FDOT press release. “The Department is proud to partner with Governor DeSantis and the Legislature in supporting the people of Florida, especially in times where every bit of savings can make a difference for a family.”

The program will give Floridians with more than 35 monthly toll transactions a 50% credit on their account, deposited monthly, effectively cutting tolls in half through Dec. 31. There is no additional registration required and serves as a continuation of the SunPass Savings initiative, which began in September of last year and saw commuters receive a 20% credit to their SunPass account after making 40 or more monthly transactions.

The new legislation includes all toll facilities that accept electronic payments, including the Turnpike Mainline (SR 91 / SR 821), Sawgrass Expressway (SR 869), Alligator Alley (I-75), Polk Parkway (SR 570), Pinellas Bayway (SR 682/SR 679), Sunshine Skyway Bridge (I-275), I-4 Connector and more. A full list of participating roads can be found on the Florida’s Turnpike Website.

Eligibility includes customers who drive two-axle vehicles, own a SunPass or Florida interoperable account in good standing and meet the minimum amount of monthly transactions. For those who qualify, nearly $400 of annual savings are expected, according to the FDOT.

The added benefit for frequent commuters comes at a time when more workers are expected to return to the office. According to a report from Resume Builder, 90% of companies said they plan to have employees in the office at least part of the week in 2023.
