2 min read December 2022 —  Sunshine and crystal clear waters have surfaced in Northeastern University’s plans as the educational institution recently announced its launch for a new campus in Miami.

According to a recent press release on the university’s website, the 14th campus will be based in Miami’s colorful Wynwood neighborhood, known for art, entertainment, food and drink and more. The campus will focus on technology, healthcare and finance.

This is the latest announcement in a growing number of Northeastern campuses from San Francisco and Vancouver to South Florida and Virginia.

“Miami is an ecosystem of economic growth with a blossoming tech culture and a growing demand for talent,” said Joseph Aoun, Northeastern’s president, as cited by the school press release. “An international city well positioned for the future, Miami is the ideal site in Northeastern’s global university system. We look forward to exciting partnerships with industry, government and academia across the state of Florida to bring degree programs in high-growth fields.”

The university received approval to offer over 20 graduate-level degree programs ranging from biotechnology to computer science and engineering.

The expansion also echoes similar interest in South Florida from universities such as the University of Florida in Gainesville, which will open a new campus in West Palm Beach with a focus on finance and artificial intelligence.

Boston continues to be an educational hub that highlights the achievements of students across the region and the country. In a recent interview with Invest:, UMASS Lowell chancellor Julie Chen noted that the Greater Boston area and state is a leader in innovation.

“We have outstanding educational institutions in Massachusetts that are known across the world through which we are able to attract students from all over the country and the world. This creates a truly diverse population and energy in this region that leads to the innovation and success of a lot of the start-ups, and even the larger companies, which eventually comes to be a powerful reinforcing cycle,” said Chen. “The other particular strength of the Boston and Greater Boston region is that we are not just a one-industry sector. There are some places that are really well known but they just have one economic focus, whereas here you can have life sciences, robotics, cleantech, and computer science intermingling. And, it is precisely this cross-over and intentional diversification that produces the collaborative success you see between academia and corporations.”
