2 min read April 2023 — Methodist Health System broke ground on its newest hospital in Celina earlier last week, after a January winter storm pushed back the originally-scheduled start date.

The $200 million project, the Methodist Celina Medical Center, will open in 2025 and sits on 46 acres beside the Dallas North Tollway and FM428. The acute care hospital will offer a comprehensive suite of services, with 30 medical surgical beds, 10 post-partum beds, eight intensive care unit beds, 12 emergency department beds in addition to cardiovascular, cancer, women’s and orthopedic care. A da Vinci surgical robot and additional space for an operating room will also be included, as well as a catheterization lab and two additional procedure rooms.

“I know that we’re surrounded by fields right now, but just wait,” said Pam Stoyanoff, president and COO of Methodist Health System in a press release. “In two years’ time, that will change and a new, beautiful, technologically efficient hospital will open, with a stellar and dedicated team of physicians, nurses and support staff.”

While the health provider is a more common sight in South Dallas, the expansion to the North Dallas community was a welcomed change, driven by the town’s explosive growth. According to Census data, the town’s population has grown over 177%, from just over 6,000 residents to over 25,000 today. The growth has led it to claim the moniker of fastest-growing city in North Texas.

“Though our deepest roots are in the city of Dallas’ southern sector, we are committed to growth — when it is for the right reasons,” said James C. Scoggin, Jr., CEO of Methodist Health System in a press release. “And as we look at the boomtown of Celina and the need for a major medical facility, these are just two of many reasons we are so excited.”

The North Texas market has seen strong growth over the last few years driven by its diverse range of industries and swelling population. The region’s healthcare sector is already a $52-billion economic engine, and while Collin County is home to 24 hospitals or medical centers already,  the majority of are located closer to the urban core in Frisco, or Plano, with the the closest to Celina located in McKinney, a 30-minute drive away. The new Methodist hospital aims to change that in a region that’s expected to be home to over 150,000 people by 2030, and comes at a time as Methodist continues to expand its operations, having recently completed its new level III trauma center further south in Charlton.

The new hospital will add 220 jobs to the region, and while staffing challenges have been common over the last few years across all industries, and particularly in healthcare, Stoyanoff believes they can work around the issue, telling D Magazine,“We plan to begin our hiring process early enough, so we are not concerned about our ability to attract the best physicians and staff.”

For Celina, the new hospital marked the beginning of a new chapter for the city. “The City of Celina is thrilled to welcome Methodist Health System to our community,” City Manager Jason Laumer said when the hospital was initially announced last year. “Methodist has provided exemplary care for generations of North Texas families, and I know their new medical center on the Dallas North Tollway will serve countless Celina families for many generations to come.”

That feeling hasn’t changed. “Methodist is truly at its best when we are engaged with the communities we serve,” Scoggin said. “We are already feeling the love.”
