Invest: Pittsburgh 20222 min read February  2022—  Although the pandemic had a significant impact on the local economy, business and community leaders speaking at the launch conference for the inaugural edition of Invest: Pittsburgh agreed that the city is not just on a path of recovery but of exceptional growth.

“It’s everything that Pittsburgh has to offer that’s causing our economy’s growth,” said President and CEO of Coghill Investment Strategies LLC Carrie Coghill during the event, noting the robust amenities and city offerings that “remain affordable and provide a strong sense of community that makes the region great for young professionals.”

With three panels touching on education, sustainability and finances, the Invest: Pittsburgh 2022 Launch Conference on Thursday, Feb. 10, held via Zoom Webinar, showcased the future of Pittsburgh’s economy from the perspective of local leaders and industry experts who provided their insights on the region’s potential looking into 2022.

Invest: Pittsburgh is the latest annual business intelligence report compiled by media platform Capital Analytics as part of its suite of yearly reports focusing on local and regional economies. “In doing the initial research for our report, we already knew what Pittsburgh had been: an industrial Steel Town that had fallen on hard times as manufacturing went to Asia decades ago,” said Capital Analytics CEO Abby Melone in her opening speech. “We also knew that the region was enjoying a rebirth, emerging from its industrial roots to forge a new economy based on technology, finance, education, healthcare and other advanced economic segments.”

Ed Gainey, mayor of the city of Pittsburgh, provided the opening keynote address, highlighting the importance of creating public policies that enable opportunities for all. “We will work together to create a city for everyone, where everyone has a seat at the table,” said Gainey.

Known for having an educated and growing labor force, a strategic geographical location and a diverse portfolio of industries, Pittsburgh is well-positioned to become a national reference for economic resilience in a post-pandemic landscape.

The first panel of the conference, “Innovation in Education: How education will continue to evolve in an uncertain environment,” explored the dynamics of today’s education landscape and what that means for the region. Moderated by President of Carlow University Kathy Humphrey, the panel featured President of Slippery Rock University William Behre, President of Seton Hill University Mary Finger, President of Clarion University of Pennsylvania Dale-Elizabeth Pehrsson and Chancellor of Penn State Greater Allegheny Jacqueline Edmondson.

The second panel, “Going Green: Pittsburgh’s next steps as a national leader in sustainability,” looked at the direction of today’s exciting energy and infrastructure landscape and what the future may bring. Moderated by Managing Principal of the Pittsburgh studio for Perkins Eastman Jeff Young, the panelists included Vice President of Sales and Marketing at WGL Energy Clint Zediak, Director of Energy for Buchanan Ingersoll & Rooney Matthew Pitzarella and President of Volpatt Construction Raymond Volpatt.

The final panel, “Financial Forecast: What the future holds for Pittsburgh’s financial sector,” discussed the  unprecedented financial markets and what to anticipate moving forward. The panel was presented by President and CEO of First Commonwealth Bank Mike Price.
