3 min read February  2022— The past two years have been hectic for the global economy, but business and community leaders within the Minneapolis-St.Paul market expressed their excitement and optimism for the future of the region’s economy at the launch conference for the inaugural edition of Invest: Minneapolis-St.Paul.

“This is an amazingly diverse, innovative and dynamic economy that we’re lucky to call home,” said Steve Grove, commissioner of the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development, in his opening keynote speech at the event. Grove touched on unique advantages of the state, such as being the No. 1 state in the nation for business survivability and being the seventh most diverse economy among the 384 metropolitan areas across the nation.

With two panels focused on tech and innovation and healthcare, the Invest: Minneapolis-St.Paul 2022 Launch Conference on Thursday, Feb. 17, held via Zoom Webinar, showcased the future of Minneapolis-St.Paul’s economy from the perspective of local leaders and industry experts who provided their insights on the region’s potential looking into 2022.

Invest: Minneapolis-St.Paul is the latest annual business intelligence report compiled by media platform Capital Analytics as part of its suite of yearly reports focusing on local and regional economies. “In doing the initial research for our report, we knew that the region was home to the country’s highest concentration of Fortune 500 companies,” said Capital Analytics CEO Abby Melone in her opening speech. “Most certainly, it is on the radar for business relocations.”

Known for having a strong civic fiber with a healthy sense of community, some of the highest voter participation rates in the country and high donation rates to nonprofits, Minneapolis-St.Paul is not only strong from a business standpoint but from a quality of life and community perspective as well. These dynamics position the market to become a national reference for economic resilience in a post-pandemic landscape.

The first panel of the conference, “The North Star: Minnesota’s rising status as a tech and innovation hub,” explored the underlying fundamentals of the region’s up and coming tech and innovation sectors. Moderated by Office Managing Partner of Minneapolis for RSM, Jamie Woell, the panel featured Founder and President of ID Insight Adam Elliott, President and CEO of Digi International Ron Konezny, and President of Normandale Community College Joyce Ester.

The second panel, “Health is Wealth: Healthcare’s critical role in creating economic growth and equity,” looked at the direction of the market’s exciting healthcare ecosystem and its importance to the success of the local economy and community. Moderated by Kim Norton, mayor of the City of Rochester, the panelists included Executive Director of Destination Medical Center Patrick Seeb, President and CEO of GREATER MSP Peter Frosch, President of Century College Angelia Millender and Director of Corporate Development at the Mayo Clinic Melissa Noel.

Vice Chair of Consumer and Business Banking at U.S. Bank, Tim Welsh, concluded the event with the closing keynote address and shared his excitement for the region’s future. “One of the things that I’m most excited about is that we want to be a region where every single person can thrive. That’s the region we want to be. Some call it inclusive economic growth. I think of it as a place we are all proud to call home.” Welsh mentioned the various accolades the region has received for being a great place to live and do business.
