Cowen and Company projects legal marijuana sales will reach $50 billion annually by 2026, from an estimated $6 billion today. Marijuana is legal in some form in 29 states and Canada. Recreational use is legal in eight states, including the entire West Coast, and Canada is expected to legalize adult use in 2018. Public opinion in favor of legalization has reached record levels, and there is a growing movement within state legislatures and the U.S. Congress to end Prohibition.
